Review of Golf Deauville Saint-Gatien

This friendly golf club is located just 15 minutes from the centre of Deauville within the Pays d’Auge, and is renowned for its welcoming reception and open terrace.

Built in 1988, the club is home to three loops of 9-holes, ‘La Vallée’, ‘La Bergerie’ and ‘La Chapelle’.  ‘La Vallée’ (The Valley) is arguably the better of the three, where there are serious undulation changes whilst heading into the valley towards the estuary of the River Seine.

Golfers must really think their way round this course, unlike parts of the other two nines, where the fairways are often wide and stray shots don’t get too penalised. The official 18-holes are ‘La Bergère’ and ‘La Vallée’.

There is a small part of the Valley course through holes 2, 3 and 4 which the locals call ‘Amen Corner’…Although not quite of the same difficulty and beauty, they are certainly the more difficult holes on the course.

The 3rd is a long Par 4 where avoiding the water on the right and bunker on the left is certainly tricky. The following hole is a short Par 3 and although it appears relatively straight forward, the double tiered green is extremely well protected by the surrounding vegetation.

On the whole, the course is not overly demanding and is more like holiday golf than a championship layout. The real highlight here is the large 18th century Norman style clubhouse, which was in the past a building where they made cider and calvados. There is a huge terrace which on a sunny day becomes a life of its own but the food is fantastic and the beer more so.
