Review of Golf de Moliets

On a picturesque piece of land located between the glamorous town of Biarritz and the urban landscape of Bordeaux, is where the Golf de Moliets is found, nestled close to the Atlantic in a dense pine woodland.

Designed by the renowned American architect Robert Trent Jones Sr and opened in 1989, Moliets golf club is regularly voted as one of France’s most beautiful golf courses. On top of that, it often ranks highly in the overall best course rankings, by no less than the Rolex golf guide. 

The course has been superbly designed and there are some splendid holes including the 2nd, a cracking Par 4 considered the hardest hole on the course, where nothing but a long straight drive down the left hand side of the fairway will allow you to attack the perilously defended green.

The 5th hole is where water is introduced into the equation and where although a Par 5, big hitters might be tempted to attack the green in 2. However, despite running through the magnificent pine woodland of Les Landes, it is on the 13th hole where you suddenly find yourself right next to the Atlantic.

A couple of Par 4s followed by a challenging Par 5 15th, where if the wind is blowing be happy to walk off with a bogey! Sadly those three holes are your only exposure to the dramatic coastline, and before you know it, you’re in the woods heading back towards the Clubhouse.

Onsite you will also find a 9-hole training course, also designed by Robert Trent Jones, driving range and other training facilities as well as a friendly clubhouse and restaurant option.

Although a good hour and a half’s drive from Biarritz, it is well worth it. The course is one where it is difficult to score well and depending on the weather, the stretch of three links holes can make or ruin your scorecard. All in all, a golf club well worth the visit and a terrific example of golf in France.
