We all know which are the established golf vacation destinations. The likes of Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Scottsdale in Arizona. Pinehurst in North Carolina.

And for good reason.

But where are those new and emerging golf destinations we can all get excited about? Which cities are seeing huge investment and development in the golf infrastructure?

Well one of those, is the growing city of St George, located in southwestern Utah. Tuck yourself in whilst we explore what this city has to offer.

Why go on a golf trip to St George, Utah?

St George has always been a popular city for tourists way before golf courses were on the map.

Its proximity to the vast Zion National Park, known for its massive pink sandstone cliffs and stunning canyons, is one of the main reasons.

It also has a lovely historic downtown. But were it not for the Zion National Park, many people may not have heard of St George.

Yet slowly but surely, St George has emerged into a prominent golfing hub.

It may not yet have the quantity of golf courses to rival some of the aforementioned golf destinations. But the quality is certainly there already!

Other major appeals to visit St George include the weather. Known for its warm desert climate, there are around 300 days of sunshine per year, making this a sure-fire contender as a year-round golf destination.

Last but not least, the magnificent backdrop. This whole area of Greater Zion is covered with awe-inspiring red rock formations, canyons and breathtaking views as far as the eye can see.

Some of the more recent course creations are quite spectacular, where you are literally playing through extinct black lava fields…wow!

Where to stay on a golf vacation to St George?

St George is the main hub, alongside the city of Washington just northeast from there. The city of Hurricane is further east past the Sand Hollow State Park.

But if you’re looking for a perfect central base, I suggest locating yourself in either St George or Washington. That way, you can easily access all the top golf courses.

Downtown St George is also where there is the most happening, with a great choice of shops, restaurants, bars and other attractions.

And getting around is easy. For example, it’s only a 10-15 minute drive between Washington and St George. And even to the furthest course, you’ll never be in the car for longer than a half hour.

Aside from the fact it has one of the best public golf courses in St George, the resort offers a choice of rooms, suites, condominiums and vacation rentals. It is also surprisingly affordable.

To top things off, the dining on offer is The Grille, which is located in Sand Hollow’s clubhouse, officially recognised as ‘The Most Beautiful Clubhouse in Utah’.

North of St George, close to the scenic Snow Canyon State Park, is the superb The Inn at Entrada. Another premier luxury resort, guests can choose from a range of different accommodation types.

There are studios, one, two and three bedroom suites, and homes to choose from. And amongst all of this is a range of amenities including indoor and outdoor pools, pickleball and tennis courts, a fitness center and so much more.

St George Golf Vacation Packages

If you’re looking for a golf vacation package to St George, I would recommend doing either one of the following.

Firstly, consider contacting the golf resort directly to see what St George stay-and-play package they can offer you.

Oftentimes you’ll find they can offer some really attractive rates as they have the luxury of heavily discounting the golf part of the package.

Many of the resorts will also have relationships with the surrounding golf courses, and are therefore able to include these in their packages.

Alternatively, if you want a range of different options and would prefer someone else to do all the arrangements and organizing for you, reach out to a tour operator.

There are a handful who specialize in offering St George golf packages including GolfZoo and St George Utah Golf.

The top rated course is the outstanding Championship Course at Sand Hollow Resort. Designed by John Fought, it is considered one of, if not the best golf course in Utah.

At Black Desert Resort, Tom Weiskopf has created an absolute gem. A course which is routed through the jet black lava fields endemic to the area, it is visually stunning. In time, this is a course which will inevitably receive more and more acclaim.

What to do on your day off

As we alluded to earlier, St George is surrounded by the stunning Zion National Park, and north of the city, Sand Canyon State Park.

Renowned for its awe-inspiring canyons, waterfalls and sandstone cliffs, a visit to St George without spending a day exploring these parks would be an opportunity missed.

Within the city, the Tuacahn Amphitheatre is well worth the visit. It’s a huge outdoor theater hidden amongst the red rock landscape.
